The Coliseum located in Rome is an elliptical building that covers over 6 acres.Its freestanding structure stands at a height of about 48 meters. The construction started in 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD. The southern side of the Coliseum was later destroyed by an earthquake in 847.The exterior and interior reflect the Roman architecture and contain many elements that can be found throughout the building.

The four story tier seating arrangement was based on the Roman society, seating around 50,000. It has about 80 entrances for the many spectators that enjoyed this amphitheatre. There were also special boxes for those with more respected positions such as an Emperor. The Coliseum was used for Emperors to gain power and popularity providing food, games, and entertainment. The arena area is 83 meters by 48 meters which is made up of a wooden floor that is cover by sand. On the lowest floor the arena provides instant access for comical acts and exotic animal displays by eight vertical shafts.The Coliseum has also provided for Roman Catholic ceremonies.
