St. Peter's Basilica:
St. Peter's Basilica is seen as the center of all Christendom and is the largest Catholic church in all the world, seating 60,000 people. Built in the 16th century, the basilica is set in the middle of Vatican City and is said to be built over St. Peter's tomb, giving it its name. The basilica is not a cathedral, as the word basilica means simply a gathering place, although it has been viewed as one of the holiest places in all of Christian belief. From an architecture stand point, the basilica and its accompanying square are seen as one of the greatest buildings from that time period.
Inside the basilica houses the infamous Sistine Chapel done by Michelangelo, but he did more than the art for the structure. He was one of the architects for the plan of the building and called for its traditional Greek cross shape it now has. He was also the architect to finish the plans for the iconic dome, which is the largest dome in the world. Directly east of the basilica lies St. Peter's Square designed by Bernini. It is made up of two large arcs enclosing the square and houses the second largest obelisk in the world. Its traditional Baroque style is what makes St. Peter's the world renowned structure it is today.
